Maintenance of good oral hygiene at home is key to good oral health. When regular maintenance breaks down, gum inflammation sets in mainly due to build-up of dental plaque .
Timely professional help can reverse early stages of gum inflammation called Gingivitis. Untreated Gingivitis can progress to Periodontitis, which involves loss of bone which surrounds the tooth. This is when tooth mobility sets in. Unfortunately, most patients notice tooth mobility when the bone loss is already moderate to advanced.
Certain Medical conditions like Diabetes Mellitus can influence the progression of Periodontitis and the response to treatment.
Most cases of Periodontitis can be successfully treated. Periodontal surgery may sometimes be necessary where appropriate.
